13. How to select one proper solar inverter for your air conditioner?
Create Date: 01/01/0001

As you know, on the market, air conditioner is usually measured in tons or BTU. To select one proper inverter, firstly, you will find the below link very informative in regards to AC power and efficiency information (India-centric)

Air conditioner selection: understand Tonnage, EER, COP and Star Rating

Now, you know that BTU is a traditional unit of heat; it is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

(Refer to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_thermal_unit)

It is also expressed as 3516 watts.

(Refer to: http://www.rapidtables.com/convert/power/BTU_to_Watt.htm)

In simple terms

·         1 ton AC will remove heat equivalent to melt 1 ton of ice in 24 hours

·         This is equal to 12000 BTU (British Thermal Unit) per hour

·         This is the cooling capacity rating found in most International (non Indian) AC specification sheets and websites

·         This is equal to 3516 Watts per hour

·         This is the cooling capacity rating found in most Indian AC specification sheets and websites

The AC's power consumption depends on its star rating

Listed below is the BEE star rating chart

The EER is calculated by the following formula

EER= amount of heat removed in W/ power consumed in W

·         Every 1 ton of cooling power (commonly known as heat removed by a 1 ton AC in one hour) is also expressed as 3516 watts

·         Hence 1.0 ton AC will be rated at least 3516 Watts

Example: Power consumption of 1 ton AC

A 5 star AC will have a EER of at least 3.5 according to BEE guidelines

·        Hence input power wattage = Heat removed (watts) / 3.5

·        Hence input wattage rating = 3516/3.5 = 1005 watts (5 star rating)

·        Ratings for various Star ratings

·        1 star - 1302 Watts

·        2 star - 1212 Watts

·        3 star - 1134 Watts

·        4 star - 1065 Watts

Thus if 5 star split ac with 1 tons cooling capacity is rated for 3516 Watts, it will consume 1005 watts per hour.

Hence, to power 12000BTU air conditioner, at least need one 1300W inverter.

As air conditioner belong to inductive loads, its surge power is about 3 times of rated power, so 4KW inverter is suitable. However, our long frequency inverters have 3 times of surge power, and considering air conditioning performance differences from difference manufactures, we suggest selecting one 2000W inverters.
